The next chamber yawned open before them, its vastness oppressive, lined with jagged pillars of blackened stone. A ring of decrepit skeletons lined the perimeter, their eye sockets flickering with pale green light, watching.

At the center, the dead stirred.

Not just one.

A mass of shambling figures, their flesh stretched tight over their bones, their eyes dull but hungry. Zombies.

Astera raised her sword, rolling her shoulders. “Hah. This’ll be fun.”

They charged in.

Steel met rotting flesh. Bones shattered. Black blood sprayed across the floor.

Bruto fought without hesitation, each strike precise, each movement clean. His axe sang through the air, cleaving through ribs, splitting skulls, dropping one after another.

Then—one of them didn’t fall.

It was different.

Bigger. Faster. Its movements weren’t sluggish or mindless—it dodged. Anticipated. A blade shot from its sleeve, catching Astera’s sword mid-swing, twisting it aside.

Its mouth opened—not in a moan, but in speech.

"You kill without thought, but do you know why?"

Bruto hesitated.

Astera didn’t.

She drove her sword through its skull, pinning it to the pillar behind it.

The corpse convulsed.

Then exploded.

A thick black gas burst forth, swallowing the room.

Bruto tried to move, tried to cover his mouth—

Darkness took him.
